Welcome to my first blog post!
Ever!
This blog has been a long time coming. Much longer than I had planned, in fact. When I started this website in September 2019, I expected it to be up and running by the end of the year.
But here’s the thing – writing is scary. Really scary. I’ve known I wanted to be a writer as long as I’ve known how to read, but fear held me back every time I tried to pick up the pen. I can’t begin to tell you how many stories, songs, posts, scripts, poems…how many ideas went unfinished.
As much as I’m scared, though, anyone close to me will also tell you I can be relentlessly stubborn. So I was adamant that my website have a blog, and I was adamant that my website not be published without it…which is how a four month project became a fifteen month project, how my website didn’t get published until the last moments of 2020.
But hey – progress is progress. (Even progress delayed by almost a year). The blog is here. I’m here. So let’s talk a little bit about where I am, where I’m going, and why you should tag along.
A bit about me & why I’m writing
My name is Abigail Wirtz. I’m a junior in the Kelley School of Business. I’m majoring in Entrepreneurship and minoring in Urban Planning & Community Development. I have a passion for using business to build better communities. Someday, I’ll be a social entrepreneur delivering on that mission.
I’m writing this blog for more reasons than I can count – it’s great experience, I love to write, it’s a good way to connect with people… but the biggest, most important reason by far is that I’m absolutely terrified.
As someone living with anxiety, I’ve spent a lot of my life afraid. And the thing I’ve realized about fear is that most of the time, it’s telling you what you want.
The way I see it, this blog is a great big scary question mark. What if I’m no good? What if people don’t like it? What if I run out of ideas? What if my words have no impact?
Like I said, though, I’m stubborn. So to put it briefly, I’m writing this blog because I’m scared. Because I have to. Because the benefits (to myself, and hopefully others) outweigh all else.
What I’m writing about
So, what can you expect to see? Well, I want to use this blog to explore. I have interests ranging from acting to social justice to biology, so the first thing to expect is variety. Mostly, though, I want to write at the intersection of life and business. Mental health, self improvement, modern professionalism, and community development – how do these things (and more) interact with our lives and our work to create a better world?
Because that’s what we’re here to do, isn’t it? To leave the world better than we found it?
So, you’ve made it this far. But why should you stick around?
Why should you read?
First, stay for the content. I have some great stuff planned, including:
– How what we consume shapes who we are
– Why I’ll never be a modern professional
– Lessons from revolutionary Abbie Hoffman
– Why everyone should be an investor
– The art of daily affirmations
– Social entrepreneurship – what it is and why it’s the future
– What we learned in 2020
…plus much, much more.
And if that doesn’t convince you, stay for connection. My whole life, I’ve learned best from the stories and experiences of others. Over and over again, I’ve been shocked by the people and places that left me feeling inspired, motivated, and understood.
Words have a remarkable power to bring people together, and that is exactly what I want to do. I want to start a conversation. I want us to ask questions and find answers. I’m here to help, whether that be advice, accountability, or just a listening ear.
We’ve got quite the journey ahead of us, and it’s only just beginning. I can’t wait to see where it takes us.
So, without further ado…
Let the blogging begin!
